I suddenly felt sick and struggled to lean over the side of the kayak fast enough to puke into the river. I heaved and some of my breakfast splashed into the water. My hair fell forward and threatened to get in the way so I pulled it back and tried to gather myself. I smelled my breakfast and that was enough to bring up a second heave and I saw powdered eggs begin to float away from the boat.

Jerry said, “come on, guys. We need to get Van to the next campsite. We don’t have a way to get…him…out of here without calling a helicopter. Let’s move and find a site with some shade where we can get him out of the sun.
